Carport Roof

Update: 16 April 2024 Design

We have a 4x4 frame holding up a grid made of 2x6 @ 24" with 2x3 purlins spaced about @24". The SunTuf panels are solid blocked with plastic supports "horizontal" on the 2x3s (including the top and bottom edges) and "vertical" plastic closure strips at both shed rakes. The 2x6s have little bird's mouths to rest on a high and a low 4x4 beam, square cut at the top to align with the edge of the SunTuf, but plumb cut at the bottom. The roof structure is sized for exactly (10) 26" x 144" sheets of SunTuf--10 @ 26" = 240" with overlaps.

I considered wrapping the post bases with GenStone, but the pieces needed would cost about $2,500. One side of a pillar, 24" high is $50, so $400 for the 36-48" high pillar shown in the rendering. The pillar cap is $50 more.

The carport roof looks like 12' sections of corrugated plastic, resting on 1x4 purlins @ 24" o.c. We'll need 10 sheets for 20'.

Suntuf installation tips: 

• Pre-drill a hole 1/16" larger than fastener diameter
• Tighten fastener until snug--if the EPDM washer becomes deformed, it's too tight.
• Never step on the panels. During installation, use a crawl board supported by 3 roof elements.

• B Clean up and protect the Workshop against falling debris
• Take down the carport at the last minute

The painter will be here sometime in April. Before then, I need to:

• Move porch couch
• Remove (4) solar path lights
• Fill in the bricks at the garage
• Decide how to/whether to paint the water heater pipes
• Remove downspouts
• Repair the drip line all around
• Detach fiber optic cable from Comcast, remove Comcast
• Pull back the basement tarp--clean the door
• Clean/repair BR3 door

Fiberon Inventory

We're not done with Fiberon decking. I have three more decks in mind--the two front doors and the BR1 deck replacement.

I have (2) 16' and (7) 12' boards with many smaller 3' to 6' pieces. That's about 120 LF, maybe 60 square feet. Roughly $600 worth of material.

From earlier posts: Fiberon boards are 5.25" with 3/16" between them.

I think I bought the lumber and decking from Marine Lumber, now Alki+Marine Lumber, and a salesman named Larry Johnson, who seems to still be there. Need to find the receipt from June 2020.

I got the blues

Here's the 20th post about exterior color anxiety. I'm leaning toward blue--not green, not gray, not anything light (30+ LRV). 15-Distance looks dark and moody on the swatch, but not on the house.

15-Distance is capital-B Blue in daylight. One shade darker on the S-W card is 8-Indigo Batik. There are other gray blues--in the direction of the existing lower panel, and then there are blues that bend toward teal. I spent some time driving around Maple Leaf noticing that there are three groups: Blue, Navy, and Dark Gray with blue undertones (like the existing lower panel). Always with white trim. 

I think I like Navy.

So, if 15-Distance is too blue, too Fisher-Price, do I go 15-Smoky Blue or 4-Naval? Or maybe teal is more exotic?

In the array of color chips, 19-Refuge (lower left) heads teal. Darker teal: 5-Rainstorm (top row, left). 4-Jasper (top row, right) is full-on green, but it's so dark it's hard to tell. 7-Sea Serpent (top row, 2nd from left) is true blue, but seems green here.

8-Indigo Batik is the color to beat--it's less gray and more definite than 15-Distance.

Test square is 8-Indigo Batik (15-Distance on each side of 30-African Gray)

Here's the plan: New dishwasher, range, and refrigerator. New quartz countertops. New sink and faucet. Everything stays where it is. Maybe I massage the NW corner cabinet a little--add-on lazy susan or something.

Update 3/1/24: Spoke to Odilio of Mata's Roofing and gave him verbal okay for his 2/29 ~9pm proposal. Agreed to an extra $2000 for SBS shingles. We'll get together the week of 3/4 to sign the contract. Price is $18368 + 10.25% tax ($1882.72), total: $20,250.72.

I told Odilio that I wanted the materials here before I give him the second payment. Now I'm thinking that I want him to say the work will start, as well.

Exterior Paint Rationale

Seemingly hundreds of colors, test painting, and two Sherwin-Williams color consultant reviews have led to here. Some kind of gray with Pure White trim will be fine for the sides and back of the house. A light gray, such as Gray Screen, is blinding on the south side--it's practically white.

Green-gray with an accent color

On the front side, we want "color blocking" on the garage and breezeway--everything, including the brick, painted with the same gray color. It will seem a shade or two darker because it's in shadow. Our choice of a gray is bounded: Gray Screen (LRV 59) is way too light, but Web Gray (LRV 13) will be dreary on the front of the house.

Pure White will tie everything together: fascia, soffit, window and door frames. Except--we don't use white trim on the front breezeway and garage doors. White trim on both BR3 windows.

Single Color

Two colors side by side is "odd" in Broadview. I only know of one house that attempts it and it is low-contrast, so I think it was just the result of leaving the old color on some walls.

What color? Regardless of specific shade, we have only a few categories that seem to work (in order of LRV):

• Black or near black (Tricorn, Greenblack, Naval, Cyberspace) 3-4
• Dark Blue (Salty Dog, Granite Peak) 5-14
• Dark Green (Laurel Woods, Pewter Green, Retreat) 12-21
• Dark Gray (Web Gray, Homburg Gray) 13-15
• Medium Blue (Storm Cloud) 23
• Medium Green (Evergreen Fog) 30
• Medium Gray (African Gray, Earl Grey) 31-32
• Light Blue - looks awful!
• Light Green
• Light Gray (Mineral Deposit, Knitting Needles, Comfort Gray, Gray Screen) 43-59

I considered Glitzy Gold (a SW expert pick!), Moroccan Spice, Porpoise, Canvas Tan, Amazing Gray--all outside my comfort zone.

Black vs. white. Black can work, but I don't think it's right for this little house at the edge of the woods. Very light gray looks good, like the full-sun example at 910 120th, but if you squint it would make Trees House look all white.

Gray vs. green. On the Breezeway, I am seeing African Gray next to Escape Gray. Forget the names: it's green-gray (as in the example above) against battleship gray. The intensity seems right--not too dark, not too light--but I think I lean green. 

Evergreen Fog is emerging as the choice. It's one shade darker than Escape Gray (as suggested by the first SW color consultant). It was the 2022 color of the year. One shade even darker (LRV 30 down to 21) would be Dried Thyme, which has the same LRV as Retreat.

Hero Corner

This leaves what I'm calling the "hero corner"--the main house from breezeway around to the brick at the living room window. I want that to contrast with the gray. I considered Tricorn Black (LRV 3). It's edgy, as hoped, referencing Shou Sugi Ban, or burnt cedar siding used in Japan. The problem is standing on the porch surrounded by black. Even with a Pure White door and white door and window trim, I think it will feel gloomy. I mocked up using black with the dining room wall a light accent color, but that just seems too busy.

The dark blue on the lower part of the house now seems somewhere between Storm Cloud (LRV 23) and Granite Peak (LRV 14). The blue seems even darker on the south side, in the sun. LRV more like Cloak Gray (LRV 11) or Grays Harbor (LRV 12). This suggests that the hero corner color--the house accent color--can have an LRV between 16 and 20 without seeming impossibly dark. Lighter than 20 and the gray part will seem darker, which will draw attention to the garage.

Possible accent colors are blue, green, or neutral. I think neutral colors (such as Peppercorn) will conflict, rather than be set off by, the gray house. Blues include Sea Serpent (LRV 7), Salty Dog (LRV 5), Naval (LRV 4). Greens include Greenblack (LRV 4), Laurel Woods (LRV 6), Isle of Pines (LRV 8), Pewter Green (LRV 12), Cilantro (LRV 14), Dried Thyme (LRV 21), Retreat (LRV 21).

I analyzed SW grays and created a table in order to find one in the LRV 21 to 33 range. (Acier, already on the east garage wall, is LRV 32.) Earl Grey (LRV 32) is light and cool, with charcoal and green undertones. Classic French Gray (LRV 24) is warm and was recommended by the SW color consultant. And African Gray (LRV 31) is the most neutral gray I've found. I considered those tiny samples on different walls on a sunny day.
