Vocabulary Choices

Trees House will respect classic 1940s home style, but the new portion between the house and garage will be more modern.

• Long, soothing, horizontal lines
• Windows and other details align horizontally
• Wide soffits, sheltering roof (think Robie House)
• Details get simpler in the bedrooms, showier in the open space
• Stained wood and brass are acceptable accents in the open space, painted in the bedrooms; the forms stay the same.

Exterior

Roof Form: Hip with wide, closed soffits
Roof Material: Dark Charcoal textured composition shingle [Alt: Metal]
Soffit: Horizonal v-groove boards (ex.), light paint (not as bright white as ex.)
Gutters: Standard ogee profile (not angular or half-round)
Downspouts: Paint out against siding--small, rectangular (not round, not chain)
Siding: Ex. horizontal clapboard, painted taupe (not dark blue) with vertical v-groove boards painted to match. Apply horizontal line (painted dark) or two to match ex. chair rail--align new horizontal lines with window frame design. Use gridded cement board on new middle section.
Accent: Roman brick (ex.)
Chimney: Roman brick (ex., cleaned up)
Garage Door: Dark bronze anodized aluminum and glass (tinted or frosted)
Rain Cover at Entry: Simple flat plane cantilevered. Stained, angled wood columns if reqd. [Alt: Single round metal column.]
Front Door: Dark bronze aluminum and glass (match garage door and window wall). [Alt: Trad. solid door painted black or very dark green.]
Door Handle: Black lever {Alt: Traditional brass Baldwin]
House Numbers: Century Gothic ("Neutra") on middle element. [Alt: Serif font with descenders, like Georgia]
Windows: Emphasize horizontal, if not in the opening shape, then the individual panes. Align muntins with other horizontal elements.Simple frame, no wood casing (outline).
Railing: Where occurs, should be horizontal--steel with welded bars @ 4", for example.

Interior

Door casing

Edges: Gyp. bd has square edges. No crown molding. [Alt. Cove at inside wall corners, 1/2" radius]
Doors: Painted 6-panel doors or bi-fold louvered door.
Door frames: Simple molding with a detail at the outside edge, such as a bead, mitered at corners. [Alt: "bead board" with square rosettes.]
Door handles. Black, simple levers. [Alt: Brass "Plymouth" handles]
Window frames: Traditional sill with horns to receive molding to match door frame. In modern section, gyp. bd. frames for windows.
Baseboards: Tall (5-1/2")--match simplicity of door frames.

Kitchen Cabinet Doors: Slab with 1/4-round radius edges. [Alt: frame with "bead board" to match alt door frames]. Light colors upper and base (house is dark). Can use different door design to distinguish dining room

Dark door with brass details

Countertops: Quartz (e.g. Caesarstone) is timeless. Square edge with slight rounding. White with aggregate chips, like terrazzo. Counters throughout--kitchen, baths, BR4 kitchen--should be consistent.
Backsplash. 1x1 mosaic?
Fireplace: Keep painted Roman brick (black? dark green?) Replace existing mantel with wood molding that projects more--simple cavetto or congé or more elaborate crown.
Hearth: Slate.
Light Switches and Receptacles. Basic toggle (not Decora). Beige throughout. [Alt: If we use brass Baldwin door handle, consider brass switch and receptacle plates in the common areas.]
Tile Floors (in Bathrooms). Large squares--smooth, but slate-like.
Tile Showers. 1x1 random mosaic colors.
